FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
2019 and beyond
What happened to the Sprints?
The Stake has officially retired the Sprints, and we thank all for your participation in this amazing program. The Sprints are still available for you to do if you would like to go back and catch up on some you missed. Look under the "More..." link at the top of the page.
(The 17th Ward defined their own Sprints for 2019; they are available in the Sprints section along with the prior Stake sprints.)
2015 Sprints
Can I do all the sprints in one month then just not worry about them the rest of the year?
You are more than welcome to do the sprints whenever you would like, however we are hoping you will do them monthly with us as a stake. This keeps us consistently involved in hastening the work of the Lord.
2014 Sprints
August: Does each member of my family need to set a separate goal of at least 100 names to index and achieve it?
Yes. Each individual should set their own goal to index at least 100 names. The goal number can be different per individual.
June: Does each member of my family need to find a separate ancestor to reserve ordinances for?
One name per family is acceptable.
We realize that for some, a lot of their family history work has been completed. We encourage you to pray and ask the Lord to help you to find ancestors whose work needs to be completed. Then act in faith.
Remember to use Puzzilla and other resources. Ask your family history consultant in your ward for help and go to the Family History Center. If all of these have been completed and still you still have not found a name, you may count it as completed, but PLEASE do not give up looking even after the sprint has finished.
June: Can I reserve an ancestor with any kind of temple ordinances needed, or does it have to be baptism and confirmation?
Any ordinances are acceptable. Remember that you need to reserve and do the work for the Sprint to be completed.
May: I am concerned with May's sprint having such personal and possibly thorough information about someone still living put on the web for everyone to read, what should I do?
When posting anything online we need to have caution and some things are better left at a personal level rather than published on the web. I would suggest using your own discretion, and leave very personal information off.
May: I do not have a good relationship with any of my relatives, and at this point in my life I am not ready to mend those. What can I do for this sprint?
Record any of your memories you might have of a member of your family who is deceased.
April: When finding the first person in my line to join the church does it need to be a direct ancestor or just that I am related?
As long as you know how they are related and you can find them on your tree you can count it.
April: Can my entire immediate family use the same person for the Sprint?
Yes, your entire immediate family can use the same person.
March: What if I request a patriarchal blessing and I find out my ancestor didn't receive a blessing?
Find a different ancestor and try again. It might be easiest to request for an ancestor who is pretty close to you in lineage such as a grandparent or great grand parent.
Also, the Church will allow you to request four patriarchal blessings per month; so request them all as soon as possible for the best chance at accomplishing this goal!
March: My family is new to the church, none of my deceased ancestors were members so I can't request a patriarchal blessing. What can I do to still complete the Sprint?
For 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation members of the church you may read the oldest living relative's patriarchal blessing (with consent) as an alternate to this sprint. If you are a first generation member and have not yet received your blessing we encourage you to prayerfully consider receiving your own.
February: Does an artist's rendition of my ancestor count?
No, we are looking for photographs we can add to family search. However if you would like to add the artists rendition of your ancestor to family search you are more than welcome to!
February: Can my entire immediate family use the same person for the Sprint?
Yes, your entire immediate family can use the same person.
General
All Year: Can I do all the sprints in one month then just not worry about them the rest of the year?
You are more than welcome to do the sprints whenever you would like, however we are hoping you will do them monthly with us as a stake. This keeps us consistently involved in hastening the work of the Lord.
Are the Sprints just for the youth of our Stake?
The Sprints are intended for ALL members of the stake age 8 years and older. (Note: you must be 13 years of age or older to have an churchofjesuschrist.org account for using FamilySearch)
Should I report to someone after finishing a Sprint?
The youth are involved in a competition and are asked to report to their Young Men or Young Women leaders when they complete a sprint. All others should report to their High Priest Group Leader.
This reporting will help us measure our goal of having 1000 members of our Stake complete the Sprints this year.
Why should I do the Sprints if I am currently already doing my family history work?
The sprints are designed to help you better understand the many aspects of family history. Many believe family history is simply looking for names and then entering it in the computer. We hope you will enjoy learning the other aspects of family history.
My name is not on the visual hanging up in the hallway at the church but I have done the sprints, what should I do?
Please report to your High Priest Group Leader so he can enter it on the reporting spreadsheet.
I didn't do some of the sprints, can I go back and do them?
YES! The youth are competing month to month but that doesn't mean you can't go back and do them once the month has passed. It just won't count toward the competition, since the winner for that month will already have been determined.
We still need to know that you participated in the Sprint, so please make sure to report to your High Priest Group Leader or Young Men/Young Women Leader when you complete the Sprint!
Can I get a list of all 12 Sprints so I can get ahead?
No, we are releasing the Sprints per month.
Remember this is not a race to see who can complete them the fastest, but to give everyone an area of Family History to focus on during each month to make this work a larger part of your life. If you complete the Sprint during a given month, continue doing more in that area to become as proficient as you can!
