Emergency Preparedness

Action Plan for April: Shelter and Heat

  • Understand basic shelter and heating needs, skills and equipment.  Gather or update equipment for your family.  Practice shelter and heating skills.
  • You can only last three to four hours in extreme conditions without adequate shelter. Maintaining your body temperature in hot or cold temperatures is vital for survival. This can be hard to do if you are out of your normal environment or the power to your home is out.

Plan:

  • Review the Links in the text
  • Resources are at the Bottom of the Page
  • Customize to your needs

Prepare:

  • Start or Update your Emergency Shelter Supplies
  • Start with basic items to keep warm for 72 hours
  • Learn the science of sheltering and layering so you can create lifesaving shelters
  • Gather sheltering supplies like blankets, tents, sleeping bags, Mylar, cold weather clothing, and clear plastic sheeting. Include sheltering items in disaster supply kits
  • Learn how to keep you home warm or cool as needed if the power goes out
  • Learn how to safely build, start, and put out a fire using a variety of different starting and extinguishing methods, then practice

      Practice:

  • Hands on practice has been shown to be the best way to be able to respond well in an emergency.   Dry run various scenarios and the anxiety of the emergency is greatly decreased.
  • Gather your supplies for clothing, shelter and heat.  Are they adequate and useable?
  • Set up your shelter (warm room, tent, other)
  • Practice using planned heat supplies safely.
  • Kids love to participate.  Let them help setting up a warm room or shelter.  Perhaps teach them about safely using a fire for warmth.
  • Help them feel comfortable in that situation.

Testaments of Jesus Christ

“The scriptures say, ‘And the children of Israel … did as the Lord … commanded Moses’ (Exodus 12:28). There is something very powerful in that simple statement of obedience. Because the children of Israel followed the counsel of Moses and acted in faith, they were saved from the plague and, in time, freed from their captivity.

So what did the Holy Ghost teach me in these chapters this week? Here are a few thoughts that have rested on my mind:

  • The Lord works through His prophet to protect and save His people.
  • The faith and humility to follow the prophet preceded the miracle of protection and deliverance.
  • The blood on the doorframe was an outward sign of inward faith in Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.”

Conversion is Our Goal,” Brother Mark L. Pace, then the Sunday School general president, April 2022 general conference,
